Journal Response #6 for Chapter 9 due Nov. 1st.

One theory a sociologist might use to explain this vast disparity in social stratification and global inequality is the Functionalist View. Kingsley Davis and Wilbert Moore concluded that stratification of society is inevitable for 4 reasons: 1.) Society must make certain it’s positions are filled. 2.) Some positions are more important than others. 3.) The more important positions must be filled by the more qualified people. 4.) To motivate the more qualified people to fill these positions, society must offer them greater rewards.
I agree with this theory because there are so many smaller, low industrialized nations that have very few material things and have no choice but to focus solely on working or farming for their food everyday to survive. The way that these 3rd world countries live has been this way for many years and they cannot change overnight. In their society or culture there are certain jobs that need to be fulfilled depending on the crops that grow there, mining, resources or whatever is prosperous in their environment.
I feel that it is every countries government’s responsibility to step up and make positive changes. Unfortunately because most government officials are wealthy, prestigious and hold much power (ruling elites) they do things to maintain the larger piece of the pie. They can control people’s ideas and control information spread by the media. They also try to dominate its society’s institutions and control military and police forces.
